Rebuy Poker Tournaments
Rebuy Poker Tournaments are increasing in popularity. They provide players with huge prizepools, and when played correctly can be extremely profitable. Rebuy Poker Tournament Players need to have a good grasp of tournament poker strategy as rebuy tournaments consist of an hour in which players can choose to rebuy, as many or as few times as they want. Players who are “knocked out” can choose to rebuy, or alternatively leave the tournament. After this hour players take there chips with them to the next stage which consists of a standard poker freeze out tournament.
Rebuy Tournament Strategy
You can approach the first hour of these rebuy tournaments in a variety of ways. It is the strategy in the first hour that is going to make or break you. If you can get through the first hour in a solid position on a regular basis then you are well on your way to having a good pay day. The ways you can play the first hour are as follows:
- You can decide that you will rebuy as many times as it takes to put you into a solid position in the tourney. Some players will rebuy up to ten times if necessary to give them the chip stack that they want. They will also add-on which solidifies their position on the leader board. Although this can give you a monster stack, you can waste a lot of money with the rebuys and you almost certainly have to cash just to get your money back. If you decide to use this strategy, approach with caution.
- Another option that I see a large amount of players using is to play a little looser than normal and to rebuy when it is necessary. The problem with using this method is that if you double up early and didn’t rebuy at the start then you are potentially costing yourself 1500 chips (assuming you start with 1500 chips). The other problem with using this method is that you aren’t setting yourself up with a game plan before the tournament starts. Failure to plan is a plan to fail. You need to decide on how you want to attack the tourney and stick with that method. This will give you the confidence you need in your game to play at your best.
- Lastly, is the method that I prefer to play with, I play just like it’s a regular tournament. I wait for my premium hands in the first hour and play them super aggressively. Players will pay you off because it is a rebuy tournament and many won’t realise that you are playing tighter than the rest of the table. You can punish the other players at the table for playing loosely by doubling up from them with quality hands. A few double ups in the first hour and you will be close to the average chip stack if all goes well. The best thing about using this method is that you save a ton of cash from not re-buyin and you stand a great chance of cashing in on the inflated prize pool.
Once the first hour is over the tournament returns to the standard Freezeout Tournament. We suggest you read our article on Freezeout Poker Tournament Strategy.
